The Dog Business

Do you love animals?

It sounds an obvious question to ask?

Nearly everyone ‘coos’ at a puppy. But puppies can become lean, mean, gnashing machines of brawn and destructive disposition, with no recall and major socialisation challenges. That’s not much fun when you’re attached at the wrist to an English Mastiff (that can weigh 150kgs.) galloping across the Common with your face daisy cutting the grass behind.

To professionally succeed with animals, it takes far more than having one yourself. Now you’re thinking about ‘living and breathing’ dogs and other animals, day in, day out. And being dependent on their happiness and welfare to make a living.

Will you get nervous? Are you a good communicator? Are you prepared to be assertive, not just with the dogs, but sometimes wayward owners?  If dogs get into a fight, how will you separate them? If one charges off, or slips their lead, what do you do about it? When a dog bites your arm, or jumps up your clean clothes with muddy paws, or needs help at the back end…?

You need love, tolerance and compassion in bucket loads. As well as being ready for the unexpected. Incidents and accidents will happen. Do you have the right mind-set to not blow your stack? To calmly and caringly sort things out as they arise, responsibly looking after a customer’s much-loved family member.
